PAYNE families
« on: Monday 13 April 20 11:27 BST (UK) »
Hi there. Very new to this site.
I have been building mine and my partner's family trees on Ancestry for a couple of weeks now and I am completely stuck.

I'm looking for information on BENJAMIN PAYNE b. 1510 and married an ENID? around 1529 I think. I can't find any information on him at all.. He is my partner's ancestor..

I am also looking for some information on EDWARD PAYNE b. 1628 and married ANNE RUSSET in 1644.. I can't find any further information on Edward such as parents. He is my ancestor..

Both PAYNE families eventually  emigrated from England to Australia..

I'm not sure if there's any connection between the families so any help would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks x

Greetings, and a warm welcome to Rootschat.

Could you let us know where Edward Payne was living and the source of the dates 1628 and 1644?  This will help us to search.

Although the keeping of Parish Registers was ordered in 1538, there are not many parishes whose registers survive that far back.  (the CofE - Catholic - CofE history may be a factor, as may be the fact that records can be lost or destroyed by fire, mould, or other neglect).

(As a general point about online trees - some are unreliable, some are inaccurate copies of other trees,  but some are excellent.  I recommend that researchers only trust trees which include original sources for BMDs to prove their accuracy).

Looking for PAYNES on FreeReg https://www.freereg.org.uk/ there are:

(all baptised in Swaffham Prior)
Nicholas bap 1 Nov 1621 son of Nicholai PAYNE
Georgius bap 12 Jun 1623 sohn of Nicholai PAYNE
Robertus bap 10 Nov 1625 son of Nicholae and Dorotheae
Roger bap 20 Nov 1627 son of Nicho PAYNE and Dorothea
Eduardus bap 14 Jun 1629 son of Nicholai PAYNE and Dorothea
Stephanus bap 9 May 1630 son of Nicholai PAYNE and Dorothea
Dorothea bap 21 Apr 1632 daughter of Nicho PAYNE and Dorotheae
Elizabetha bap 29 May 1633 daughter of Nicho PAYNE and Dorotheae
Jonathan bap 8 Nov 1634 son of Nicho PAYNE and Dorotheae

(given the spelling I suspect the entries were written in Latin, but I haven't seen the original parish registers)

I couldn't spot a baptism in or near Swaffham Prior for Nicholas, or his marriage to Dorothy, although there are PAYNE (with various spellings) in and around the parish in the sixteenth and early 17th centuries.

The Swaffham Prior burial register does not name the parents of children who were buried before the 1640s (some parishes do, but unfortunately not this one).  FreeReg has burials for PAYNE from 1629 onwards including:
Eduardus PAYNE bur 24 Jun 1629 (this could be Edward bap 14 Jun 1629)
Stephanus PAYNE bur 26 Dec 1630 (this could be Stephanus bap 9 May 1630)
Dorothea PAYNE bur 30 Apr 1632 (this could be Dorothea bap 21 Apr 1632)
Elizabetha PAYNE bur 4 Jun 1633 (this could be Elizabetha bap 29 May 1633)
Jonathan PAYNE bur 26 Nov 1634 (this could be Jonathan bap 8 Nov 1634)
Nicholaus PAINE bur 26 Nov 1639 (this could be Nicholas senior or Nicholas junior)
Dorothea PAINE bur 3 Dec 1639 (this could be the wife/widow of Nicholas)
Nicho PAINE bur 10 Jun 1664 (this could be Nicholas senior or Nicholas junior)

I have a horrible feeling that the person who compiled the tree naming the father of Richard PAYNE born c1649 Clifton upon Dunsmore (Warwickshire) as Edward PAYNE baptised in Swaffham Prior may well have made an error.  I am inclined to believe that this Edward died as an infant.

Philip
