So, if in 1939 Herbert says his birthday is 9 May,  it does match the date given on that baptism in 1895. The year of birth given is one out, but that is not terribly uncommon in the 1939 Register. As has often been pointed out on Rootschat!

I'm not saying that you don't need a marriage certificate, but it looks good for your Herbert being the son of Josiah/Isaiah.

i know he married hilda she died in 1944 i think they had 1 son edwin g smith born 9 August 1924
