Help please Michael Bergin, born 1835
« on: Monday 13 April 20 19:10 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm looking for a bit of help after hitting a brick wall. I realise the dates are far back and probably very unlikely I'll find anything but I thought I'd ask the experts on here!

My 4th great grandfather is Michael Bergin, born 1835, married Bridget Burns/Devlin in Durham, 1868. He died in Durham in 1876. On a marriage record I've found, it shows his father's name as Darbi and mother's as Catherina (Latin versions)

Bridget was born in 1844 in County Armagh (I think) to John Devlin and Elizabeth, again according to the above marriage record. When Michael died, Bridget remarried to William McGuire in 1878 in Durham.

I think Michael may have been born in Ireland too? Struggling to find much.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Was Michael a widower when they married?
Do you have them in 1871?

I say this because there is a Michael living Kyo, Durham who is boarding but married with children.
One is Jeremiah and Darby is a nickname for Jeremiah.

1871 4956/45/2

P.s. you can just post a transcript rather than a large image.

I'm not sure, all I have is my 3rd great grandmother is Mary Bergin, born 1875 in Sherburn Hill, Durham to Michael Bergin and Bridget Bergin (Devlin)

Hmm that is interesting. I don't actually have any census records of Michael and Bridget together, just Mary's birth records.

Thank you, I didn't know Darby was a nickname for Jeremiah so that may help

A few ideas
The civil marriage certificate would tell you the status of the spouses - whether they were widowed or not. Why was Bridget Devlin married as Burns, for example and like wise for Michael.
I can’t find Bridget in 1871, can you?

1871 4956/45/2
Kyo, Durham
Michael Bergen married 40 yrs Coal Miner b Ireland
Jeremiah 10yrs b Ireland
Eliza 12 yrs b Ireland
They are boarding in a Kennedy household.

September 1879 marriage
Houghton Le Spring
Eliza Bergin and James Riley

1911 census
Eliza Riley has birthplace Queens County, Castle Durrah

September 1883 marriage
Jeremiah Bergin and Margaret Hackett

1911 census
Jeremiah Bergin b Queens County

It might be that Eliza and Jeremiah (in 1911) are the ones with father Michael in 1871

Catholic records for Durrow parish —  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0968
There are gaps

There are indexes on Ancestry and FindMyPast otherwise it is trawling through.
I can’t see a baptism for Jeremiah Bergin.
There is a baptism for Elizabeth Bergin which could be Eliza but no real evidence as yet.

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000635294#page/5/mode/1up
Number 61 - 29th May 1858 parents Michael and Mary (Whalen)

In the same parish there are these baptisms
19th January 1823 Daniel Bergin - parents Darby and Betty Corrigan
6th September 1825 James Bogin (transcription on Anc) parents Dorby (transc.) and Eliza Carrigan

I can’t see Michael but there are gaps.

These might not be yours though. You would need to match your Michael with Michael from 1871.

Thanks for the help heywood, it's all very confusing for me  :D ???

No, I'm struggling to find Bridget as Bridget Bergin on any census records. I have birth records on GRO etc showing who I believe as their children's 'mothers maiden name' as Devlin though

It is really strange how there seems to be no sign of Bridget Bergin (or any surname variant) in 1871 anywhere in Durham  ???

They don't make it easy for us do they!
