Missing MacDonald
« on: Tuesday 14 April 20 13:50 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone
Hope you are all  keeping well in these awful times.
My ancestor Selina Towell b 1858 in Williston Somerset married a Donald Wallace MacDonald in 1879 in Williton.
Their marriage certificate states Donald as a Widower aged 27years . Occupation painter. His father is named as William Donald MacDonald occupation Architect.  In the 1881 census Selina is living with her parents in Williton. Referred as Selina MacDonald married. No mention of Donald.  I cannot find out ANYTHING else regarding Donald.  No birth , former marriage,  death. . In 1898 Selina marries Charles Roswell again in Williton. Presumably Donald has died. They then emigrate to Canada in 1902.
Any help with finding Donald much appreciated.
Take care every one

I have seen that one, but if I remember rightly, his father's name didn't fit.

You probably have so forgive the suggestion but have you looked in Scotland records for his birth and previous marriage?

Guessing he doesn't appear on English census before he marries Selina.

There should be a death for his previous wife somewhere, may or may not help but it can't have been too many years before he married Selina because he was only 27 then.

'In 1898 Selina marries Charles Roswell again in Williton. Presumably Donald has died.'

Does she state that she is a widow?  Does she have any children from Mr MacDonald?

There is an account in the "West Somerset Free Press", 9 June 1888, of a Donald Macdonald being arrested for drunkeness in Williton after trying to force his way into the house of his father-in- law Mr Towell.
Donald Macdonald is described as a "painter from Petworth, Sussex". As he had been locked up for a few days before he went before the Magistrate, they decided that was punishment enough and dismissed the case.

Donald Macdonald,"a painter from Dulverton "is mentioned in The West Somerset free Press , 8 May 1897, giving evidence at the inquest of a suspected suicide in Dulverton, which is quite near the boundary with Devon.
