Arctic Star
« on: Tuesday 14 April 20 15:20 BST (UK) »
How can I tell if my late father qualified for the arctic star medal?  He joined the royal navy in 1942 and I have some photos he took off Greenland and also a list of ships he served on (I have his Certificate of Service) and I know he was on escort duty in the Atlantic but  thats it.  Many thanks  :)

Hi,
You may wish to post a list of his ships for us to check out. The problem is that not all sea-going ships are shown on the service record. Often you see shore accounting bases and the actual sea time is not in evidence.

The Arctic Star is granted for operational service of any length north of the Arctic Circle (66 degrees, 32’N) from September 3 1939 to May 8 1945, inclusive.

Hi - not sure if you got my response plus I tried to send a photo of ships he served in but I’m not very good as I’m new. He served on HMS Swale and Easton for a while and was at a lot of shore based establishments as well.
Thank you

Hello Leedsgirl, welcome to RootsChat :)

To put a photograph in your posts, you are looking for a box that says "attach" it will appear just under the box in which you type in.

Hi,

You can see the individual service for HMS Easton here
https://www.naval-history.net/xGM-Chrono-10DE-HMS_Easton.htm

And you can see the convoy dates for HMS Swale here (there is no individual service for this ship on this site)

https://www.naval-history.net/xDKEscorts15Fr-River3.htm

You will have to match up your father's service dates with the above to see if he qualifies. If he does match up and you have his service number, then it's just a case of filling out the medal application form, sending it off and waiting.

Simon

Many thanks for the info. I’ve looked and he was on a lot of runs with HMS Swale. There are , I think, land based establishments eg Eaglet(Swale) Fennell (?) (Swale) which are in the dates I’m looking at what do they mean?  I’ve got St Angelo (Easton) and Pembroke IV (Easton). What do they mean
Thank you

The names in brackets are the ships the others are shore accounting bases.
St Angelo was in Malta. The others were UK. Both ships mentiioned HMS SWALE and HMS EASTON were not involved in the Arctic convoys.

Hi Hugh
Thank you for the information. I found photos of his ship covered in thick ice marked ‘taken off Greenland’ and wondered. I also found a trade certificate for torpedo service on Vernon and Easton. He completed a PFF course and was also granted a 1st good conduct award. I have a photo which shows he has a torpedo badge on his right sleeve
It’s all very interesting !
Thank you. Sue
