Cando, Thank you so much for that information. It is very interesting. The lady I am helping and for whom I am seeking this information, told me weeks ago that the "family story" was that her grandfather (Garnet Alfred) was not born a Levee.  She thought perhaps his mother had remarried. My research of Alfred John Levey/Levee on Trove has brought up several mentions of his less than honest behaviour so a temporary name change would not be surprising.

Kind regards,

Geoff.

You could understand the local registrar making an innocent error with a surname and even the given names as information was given verbally, however to have all Tasmanian births with the surname LAWRENCE certainly raises a few questions as to why.

Hi wivenhoe, Thank you for that information. It gives me a lot more to follow up.  We did not know about the Canadian connection. Kind regards, Geoff.

I’d say that as he married as Levey, but is using an alias and incorrect marriage year for the births, he may not have been from Canada. You will need the marriage cert for more - possibly - reliable information.

197/566 1898 LEVEY Alfred John to THOMAS Ida Maud Adelaide

Possibly him up for theft in Tas, 3rd column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article151581334

Last column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article38115630

2nd column, says he was elderly: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article38116113

If he was 78 at time of death then he was in his 51 at the time of the crime. Is that elderly?

Finally acquitted, the following year, 2nd column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article151696503

Interesting, a daughter Estella looking for Alfred Levey, watchmaker/jeweller in 1909. 2nd column:

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article228080110

Could explain his name change, if he thought folk may be looking for him.
