Bastardy Bonds
« on: Wednesday 15 April 20 10:17 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Does anyone have access to bastardy bonds for North Yorkshire or know where I can search them?

I am looking for a bastardy bond associated with a child Henry Croft born circa 1854 father named in the bond Joseph Raine.  I am not sure if the mother was unmarried or may have been a widow.

Cheers Ken

Ellen Croft married Chapman Dinsdale 1859

1861 shows another Croft child Margaret aged 4 also b Carperby

Neither Henry or Margaret's birth reg shows a mmn indicating both were illegitimate

The 1859 marriage transcription shows her father as Michael Croft.  If she was a widow - her father should have a different surname

An interesting 1851 entry for Joseph Raine

The birth reg for the Croft child shows him as Joseph Raw Croft - mmn Raw

I have a copy of the Bastardy Bonds but they only start at 1852.

However, there is mention of Eleanor Croft and John Raine of Carperby miner:

Feb 1857 Eleanor Croft of Carpbery John Raine of Carperby miner.

March 1857 Eleanor Croft of Carperby John Raine of Carperby no appearance.

Eleanor Croft had 3 children before she married Chapman Dinsdale June 6th 1859 at Aysgarth:

Chapman Dinsdale 39 b Carperby lead miner son of Alexander married Ellen Croft 30 s Carlerby dau of Michael stonemason.

Henry Croft bap May 29th 1851 at Carperby buried Sept 4th 1851 at Aysgarth

John Henry Croft bap Sept 16th 1855 at Carperby

Margaret Croft born c 1857 at Carperby.

There is a John Raine born at Castle Bolton June 26th 1831 son of Joseph Raine and Edith (Horn) who married Nov 29th 1819 at Aysgarth

John Raine died Dec 9th 1900 at Mifflins Wisconsin USA
He married Susanna Anderson.

Ken:

My original answer to the posting was just about Bastardy Bonds but I am , like most people with Dales links, remotely related to some of those mentioned but a long, long way out:
Chaprman Dinsdale is 2nd cousin 3 times removed.
John Raine is 1st cousin 3 times removed.
So not what you could call close relatives !!
