Scottish Covenanters
« on: Thursday 16 April 20 10:06 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am writing to ask if anyone have any further information on the Covenanters listed in the Covenanters  index and from Torthorwald or Torthorall (same place).
A number of people named Little from Torthorwald are listed who I believe may be my ancestors. They are listed in the Register of the Scottish Privy Council 1684. My question is, what punishment were these people given? Is there any way of finding out?
They appear on page 654 of the above.I would assume as they are listed that they would be in serious trouble?

Any help or points in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. This makes interesting reading. However, this is a little earlier. The people from Torthorwald we’re listed in 1684.I will look through the linked site though, as I might be able to find something there.

Thanks again!

in 1683/84 the Government had the upper hand and many were called to swear allegiance to the King and to take a test of loyalty. Failure to appear resulted in their names being added to the "Fugitive" List and those were also later called to a "trial" - the few who did appear to this second judicial exam were often executed for treason although some faced banishment from the country.

1684/85 saw the Government really press its clampdown on the Covenanters in a period which became to define the time as "The Killing Time".

Summary executions appear to have been the order of the day and even being in possession of a Bible in a public place meant death, although those taken prisoner were subjected to a trial (often charged with treason) with many banished from the country or even sent to England for punishment.

If you go to the Internet Archive www.archive.org you should be able to find a book "The Covenanters" by J King Hewison which will fill in a lot of the background

Hi,

Thanks Falkyrn, I seem to be heading in the right direction with your help.
What I would really like to find is a record of what happened to the people of Torthorwal listed in 1684.That is of course if such a record exists.

Thanks again!!
