I have looked at Alan's tree. Alan is 90 years old I am 83 years old. As 4th cousins we should share a Grandparent, however I do not see one we share.

I will try again. Thanks

You may find that the connection goes further back.  You would need to trace back from yourself and your cousin to find that connection.

If you would like any help do ask.  Rootschatters are always willing to help.

1st cousins share a grandparent (or grandparents). 2nd cousins share a great-grandparent. 3rd cousins share a great-great-grandparent. 4th cousins share a great-great-great-grandparent.
That's the basic explanation.
I don't know much about DNA but as Girl Guide said in reply #4, the connection between you and your cousin may be several generations back.
