Igoe
« on: Saturday 18 April 20 08:35 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am looking for information on the IGOE family.  They lived at Callow, County Mayo, Larganmore, Ireland.  They are my grandparents and great-grandparents.   My Great-Grandparents were John & Mary Igoe born 1867.  They had may children.  The names that I   know of are:  Thomas 1888,   Patrick 1898, Mary Ellen 1899 - 1974 (My Grandmother), Michael 1901, Daniel 1903, Bridget 1905, & John 1910.  I   am looking for information on my grandmothers siblings.  My grandmother moved to Brooklyn but not sure what year.  I know she was there by 1927 because she was married in New York that year.  Later moved to California.  I believe that a few to the brothers stayed in Ireland.  Thank you to anyone who had information.  Hope everyone is safe from this terrible virus. xo

In both of the relevant 1901 and 1911 Ireland census returns, they were shown as living in the townland of Larganmore in the civil parish of Killasser (Callow is the electoral district):
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Callow/Larganmore/1593437/
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Callow/Larganmore/735162/

Larganmore is here:
https://www.townlands.ie/mayo/gallen/killasser/callow/larganmore/

The couple in question were John Igoe (spelling variant Igo) and Mary Durcan (spelling variant Durkan) who were married at Foxford RC Church on 18 March 1897:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1897/10446/5804256.pdf

The address recorded for both bride and groom was Leckee, a townland in the civil parish of Toomore:
https://www.townlands.ie/mayo/gallen/toomore/toomore/leckee/

First child to this couple looks like Patrick Igoe, baptised in Toomore RC Parish on 21 February 1897 (born the previous day according to the baptismal record, the given address was Leckee) - I couldn't readily find the civil birth record, perhaps someone else this reading might.  Then:

- Mary Ellen Igoe born 11 July 1899:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1899/02025/1776937.pdf
- Michael Igoe born 18 September 1901:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1901/01939/1750172.pdf
- Daniel Igoe born 31 August 1903:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1903/01855/1723302.pdf
- Bridget Igo born 20 September 1905:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1905/01759/1693045.pdf

A Catherine Igoe was baptised for this couple in Toomore RC Parish on  2 February 1908 (born on 31 January according to the baptismal record, the given address was Leckee) - Again I couldn't readily find the civil birth record, perhaps someone else this reading might.  Then:

- John Igo born 21 September 1909:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1909/01589/1639198.pdf
- Honor Igoe born 11 June 1912:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1912/01479/1602249.pdf

On the face of it, the address of Leckee consistently cited in the various marriage / birth / baptismal records mentioned above from 1897 to 1912 conflicts with the address in the 1901 and 1911 census returns, for they look to be two distinct townlands in different civil parishes several miles apart - perhaps someone will be along to resolve that one.

A 19 year old Irish domestic named Mary Ellen Igoe arrived at New York aboard the SS Baltic on 10 April 1920, her nearest relative was recorded as her father John Igoe of 'Largannial' [presumably what the writer's ear made of Larganmore], Swinford, Ireland, the name of the person she was going to join was recorded as her Uncle John Durkin of 40 East (?) Street, Brooklyn, NY.

There is loads of information on-line regarding a Eugene Igoe from County Mayo who as a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) went 'head-to-head' with Michael Collins and the IRA in Dublin during the Irish war of independence. He was a member of the Cairo Gang and later, leader of the Igoe Gang.

I imagine so, a February 1898 birth would be a better fit.

The New York, State and Federal Naturalization records include a Declaration of Intention on 16 February 1925 at Brooklyn NY, signed by a Mary Ellen Igoe, while her stated date of birth isn't a match (4 September 1901), her date of arrival in the USA and the identity of the ship that she arrived on is an exact match for my last paragraph at reply #1, in the declaration she said that her last foreign residence was 'Fox ford Co. Mayo' and that she was living at '621 Westmin[i?]ster Rd., Brooklyn'.

If you do a bit of online digging on that '621 Westmin[i?]ster (Rd/Road)' address in Brooklyn, you will see Durkan/Durkin references... I can't be more explicit here because of the forum policy on living people, it may well be utter co-incidence, but you may want to follow that up, if only to eliminate it - but maybe this will trigger something...

The 1910 United States Federal Census shows an Irish born 37 year old John J Durkin living at 40 East 2nd Street Brooklyn, together with his 35 year old wife Mary and 6 year old son Joseph, John was shown as 15 years married and having immigated to the US in 1894.  What looks like the same family is living at 621 Westminster Road Brooklyn in the 1925 New York State Census and the 1930 United States Federal census. The 1939 Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported that a John J. Durkin died at 621 Westminster Road on 14 June, the report mentioned that his son Joseph and two (named) grandchildren still lived at that address. A transcript of his death certificate names his parents as John and Mary Durkin.

A speculative possibility for John Durkin and his sister Mary who married John Igoe in 1897 are these folk born to John Durkan and Mary Quinn at Leckee:

Such surnames (Igoe and Durkan) aren't uncommon in the area, but given the specific address and the father's forename in the above marriage registration, just to note the following possibility for a birth of John Igo in 1869, mother's name Mary Reynolds:
