Request for help: Have record of cremation but can't find death record
« on: Saturday 18 April 20 14:14 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to find a record of my Aunts death so I can order a death certificate.  I'm perplexed as I can find the date of her cremation but not the corresponding death record.  I'm very much a beginner so have posted this to the beginners board rather than the  'look up' board as I'm looking for advice as much as the answer

Edith Jackson
Date of Birth - Q2 1904 Prestwich  GRO Vol 8D p310
Date of Cremation 17th Oct 1973  Hollinwood Cemetery, Oldham Lancashire

Mother's maiden name - Brown

I've searched FreeBMD, Familysearch and Ancestry.com with no luck.  I've tried to cover possible errors in transcription etc by not having exact dates and names but still no luck. Can anyone please advise

There's a probate entry for her - death date 12 Oct 1973, probate 15 Nov 1973, Manchester Registry
Residence - Oldham

No death reg so far found, as you say   :-\

There is a possible entry on the Lancashire BMD

Edith Jackson, 1973, Manchester  - local ref BOOK/B16A/77

No age given.

I'm not familiar with a BOOK ref and no age is given. It usually refers to the sub-district.

I'm not at all sure about this entry  :-\

Hello Gadget

Many thanks for your quick response,  it's good to know that I haven't missed anything obvious re finding the record.

I was looking for the probate record - can you tell me what database you used to find that record as I can't find it in ancestry.com.

re the Lancashire BMD database, the book ref eventually links to the Manchester Council online ordering page  for copy certificates but unfortunately they have removed the search and ordering facility due to the Covid-19 crisis

HI there,

Use the official Gov website.

https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/Calendar?surname=jackson&yearOfDeath=1973&page=8#calendar

Was her husband already dead?
Is it likely that she died in another country?
Abroad on hols or even Scotland or Ireland?

I was wondering if she died abroad - was her husband Charles Jackson?

Thank you for replies, my aunt never married, if that's helpful. I do know she was very poor (my mum used to give her money for the electricity meter and her cigarettes) so its very unlikely she would be abroad. I wonder if she died in hospital if that would have any bearing on the records

Thanks for clarifying.  I believe it usually says on probate entries if the person died in a hospital.
