How can I search historical records, using only surname + profession?
« on: Saturday 18 April 20 15:15 BST (UK) »
I'm searching for a Teacher of Music. Male.
Born probably around 1905, with some leeway either way.

All I have is his profession (violinist, pianist, teacher, performer), plus a surname which sounds like LAWTON or LAUGHTON or LAWSON.

He taught at Uppingham School, maybe 1940s/50s? and had strong links to the county of Rutland.
Also played in a couple of films.

How do I reliably search the records using these sparse details?

Thank you for all suggestions.

Hi Rosie99, thank you - I've attempted all sorts of permutations, but can't seem to link all the different aspects in my search... I have a lot to learn! I will try what you suggest and report back.

There's no evidence that the teacher ever lived in Uppingham, though - i know that many music teachers travelled from e.g. London to work at the posh public schools, so he could have been resident anywhere in the UK. That's the problem.

Why not contact the librarian or archivist at Uppingham School, via their website?
A

Hi rosie99, thank you...
Did you find a likely surname, though? I've tried that too but couldn't (yet) see anything which matched... Am I searching in the wrong way?

Hi ainslie, yes that's the obvious way forward, and I've tried it, however the archivist hasn't been able to assist. We don't know if this music teacher was a peripatetic visiting teacher from elsewhere or a regular member of staff. The relevant Directors of Music have long ago retired and left. No Christian name available, and the surname has only just been suggested. So I'm trying the records, to hunt for further clues.
