Walsh/Walch Duckinfield
« on: Monday 20 April 20 15:01 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
I've found myself a bit stuck on a branch of my family tree research and believe I need to be looking at Duckinfield, Cheshire or surrounding areas like Stalybridge, Altrincham etc. My 3x great grandmother Sarah Hannah Andrews (July 1866-1942 - Eccles/Barton, Lancashire) married a John Walsh (in one record it's recorded as Walch, but Sarah and children kept it written as 'Walsh'). The record I've found is October 1891 in St John's Chapelry in Duckinfield, Cheshire with her father James Andrews (correct) and John's father 'John Walch'. John died in late Sept 1900 at age 30 so I know he was born around 1870 - Sarah had no connection to Cheshire so I believe it's of connection to John. A few census have come up but I can't quite figure out if I'm looking at the right person - there's an 1871 census for Stalybridge, Cheshire (very close to Duckinfield) which lists a 'John Walsh Walsh' and a John Walsh as grandfather - can't figure out who the mother is as there are 3 listed 'daughters' all with the surname Walsh. A couple of others came up with a father as John Walsh but again, some of the places/birthyear of John has me confused. If anyone has any idea where I'm best to look would be fantastic. It has got me very confused!

What occupation is given for John's father on the marriage cert and were either of the witnesses surname Walsh?

Is any age shown for John? What was his occupation?

In 1881 it looks like the John you found age 3 grandson is age 13 nephew with

Catherine Walsh 68
Catherine 36
Ellen 28
Eliza 26
John 13 piecer in cotton mill

If he is the right John he could have put his grandfather John down as his father which wasn't uncommon but age doesn't quite fit if he was 30 when he died in 1900.

I might be able to get a copy of the marriage register for John Walch and Elizabeth Jackson when we are out of lockdown.
