Help needed by PC illiterate octogenarian
« on: Monday 20 April 20 16:07 BST (UK) »
having been inactive for a time with my research I have just decided to take up where I left off. unfortunately I am unable to open FTM 2010 on my windows laptop, I am also unable to open a back up which I have on a memory stick. I have recently changed laptops and all data was transferred by the professional from whom I bought the laptop. I have made an attempt to solve the problem myself but have found difficulty in understanding it all. please is there some kind person who could explain in PC dummy terms how to resolve my problem; that is if there is a resolution

You need to re-install FTM2010 on your new laptop.

Hi

If the FTM 2010 software was re- loaded by whoever sold you the laptop - your memory stick should work.  Without the FTM software - it won't.

Can you see an FTM icon on your home page?

ftm was not loaded onto the new laptop unfortunately FTM2010 is on disc and my laptop doesn't take discs. it's back to the professional once present conditions are lifted.

In due course the professional or someone you know may be able to lend you an external disk drive which will enable you to load the software.

My laptop [new last year] doesn't have a disk drive so I  had to borrow one to install some older software.

If you have disks for an OLDER version of FTM you may find that works.  I'm still using FTM v6 (about 20 years old) perfectly happily on a win10 machine.

As a workaround for ribenton, I believe RootsMagic may open FTM files and there is a downloadable free version.

Stay safe everyone
