Births in Langport, Somerset
« on: Wednesday 22 April 20 03:52 BST (UK) »
Looking for the maiden name of my 4th great-aunt Mary Day.  According to her gravestone in Richmond, Quebec, she was born May 18, 1842 in Langport, Somerset, UK. She married John Barrington Day (in Canada around 1863 we think but no proof) and first child was born in 1865 in Quebec. John Barrington Day was originally from Stoke St. Gregory but is found in the Canadian census of 1861 as a bachelor.

I can't find a record of their marriage or her maiden name but have most of the other relevant information about the family. Any help appreciated.

Linda from Canada

Fun task!

There are 19 Mary's born in the Jun qtr registered in the  Langport registration district in 1842. And about 10 Marys baptised at Langport after May 1842-Jan1844. Many of these have birth dates written on the register, but none match yours, ie 18 May 1842.

I see on the 1911 Canadian census that she says she immigrated in 1863 and is Presbyterian. I wonder if she'll be on a non-conformist baptism register?

lhorosko can probably answer better, but I think civil registration did not begin in Quebec until the 1920s. I can find some of the children's baptisms, but the ones I've seen don't give mother's maiden name.

Not that this helps finding Mary's maiden name - what about naming patterns of their children?

Is this John Barrington Day and his family?

Civil parish
Stoke St Gregory
1841 Piece 941 Folio10Page 15
James Day 45
Ellen Day 45
John Day 3
George Day  5

1851 Piece 1922 Folio 320 Page 31
Stoke Gregory
James Day 57 Farmer of 30 Acres
Elinor Day 57
George Day 16 Farmers son employed on farm
John Day  14 Stoke, Somerset.   Ditto
James Smith servant 16

Is this the above George found in non-conformist records

George Gill DAY
Birth 10 Jul 1835 St Gregory, Somerset,
Father James DAY Mother Mary dau of Samuel BARRINGTON

George Gill DAY minor, father James both Farmers
married 16 Apr 1855 Charles the Martyr
Sophia WOOD, father William

I see on the 1911 Canadian census that she says she immigrated in 1863 and is Presbyterian.

I wonder if she'll be on a non-conformist baptism register?

Potentially Mary ? should be on the UK census 1851 & 1861

This is the closest I could find to 18th May 1842 birth date given for Mary DAY
BUT she has a middle name and a different place of birth  ???

Mary Jane STREET 9 weeks
Father:   John Street Mother:   Martha Ann
Baptism 15 May 1842 Swindon, Wiltshire

There is this non-conformist entry with the exact dob but she was born in Lancashire - so doubtful if this is her

Mary SPENCER Birth 18 May 1842 Higham, Lancaster
Event Type:   Birth
Father:   John Spencer Mother:   Mary Hendal

Thanks Ladyhawk

That is indeed the right Day families - George Gill Day is my 3rd great-grandfather.

And, like Maddys52, I have looked at the children's baptisms and haven't found the mother's maiden name.
