The elusive James Taylor of Hunslet
« on: Wednesday 22 April 20 12:24 BST (UK) »
James Taylor married Sarah White on 18 April 1881 by Banns at St Peter's Leeds. Both gave their age as 20.
James Taylor was a miner, address Cavalier Street, father's name James Taylor also a miner.
Sarah White address Mill Street, father James White, Hackle Maker.

Given that the marriage was a few days after census day, I was surprised that there was no sign of either of them at the given addresses.

the best I have found for James is an address in Hillidge rd, Leeds. That James is 18, a miner b Hunslet with father James,  labourer recently coal miner, age 62, b Beeston, Yorks, married but no wife with him.

Sarah is at Varley Square Hunslet with her widowed sister Rachael Long. Sarah is age 20 b Scotland.
Rachael has two sons surname Twigg and a daughter surname Long. Also in the house is Sarah's illegitimate son, Simpson Dixon White. I am certain this is the correct Sarah, because Simpson is with her on later censuses after she has married James

I have James and Sarah on 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses.
James is consistently born in Hunslet and aged 29, 39 and 49 respectively. I would therefore have expected him to be stated as 19 not 18 in 1881.

I am not 100% convinced I have the right James in 1881, can anyone find a better match, please.

Not sure:

17 July 1854 - St Peter, Leeds
James Taylor, 30, widower, Miner of Hunslet.  Father:  James, Smith
Harriet Firth, 26, spinster of Hunslet.  No father named

Both made their mark.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thank you both, that is looking like the right James and his father James, and his father James as well.

James first marriage could be to Sarah Thomas, 5 June 1843 at Leeds. His father is James Taylor - smith. Hers is Robert Thomas - miner. Both full age and both of Beeston

Thank you, but the James I'm looking for is consistent about being born in Hunslet. Looking at the image it looks like the birthplace for this Taylor family was in Derbyshire. It looks like South...field (as one word with two or three letters in the gap). I wonder if it might be South Wingfield (spelt here as Southwinfield)

John Pemberton and Rachel Scaife. I did find a likely Rachel Scaife in the area. Age 20. Possibly a friend of Sarah's - couldn't find a connection as a relative
