William Robert Collier
« on: Thursday 23 April 20 07:24 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on William Robert Collier B 1867 Oxford. Believe he married Maria Ellen Littlefair 30 Dec 1891 Northallerton. He may have died in 1941. Cannot find any children?
Any assistance as always greatly appreciated. David

According to his statement at the time of the 1911 census, he had had 2 children, both of whom were still living. You will find their names on "Family Search 1911".
His wife is shown as Maria Ellen, born Osmotherly.
He states he was born in London.

The William R Collier who died in 1941 was William Richard.

It looks as if Maria Ellen may have died in 1936, aged 66, registered in Leigh. On " Find a Will" Maria Ellen is described as a widow.
I cannot find William on the 1939 register.

Thank You! The Family Search 1911 states that this William was born in Leigh Lancashire not Oxford so do not think it is the right one. Thanks again.

He is in a few trees on Ancestry.  They have a variety of death dates and places, but suggest he died in 1876 in Oxford (or the Gambia or USA)

The death in 1876 has him as William Collier.

The photo of the gravestone has his name in full and as son of William and Phoebe, death in 1876 in Oxford.

Have you got him on any censuses with his family apart from 1871?
Presumably you must have to give that marriage in 1891.

William Robert was son of William and Phoebe, according to his baptism, so the 1876 death does look likely

The original copy of 1911 on Ancestry shows William Robert, husband of Maria Ellen, to have been born in London. If this not your William Robert, your man did not marry Maria Ellen Littlefair.

The Collier/Littlefair marriage produced at least two children

COLLIER, CHARLES  RICHARD     LITTLEFAIR
GRO Reference: 1895  M Quarter in NORTHALLERTON  Volume 09D  Page 657

COLLIER, JAMES  WILLIAM     LITTLEFAIR
GRO Reference: 1893  M Quarter in NORTHALLERTON  Volume 09D  Page 618

These are the incorrect ones as per the 1911 census

Do you know what William's occupation was?

Ashford: Somerset, London
England: Devon, London, New Zealand
Holdway: Wiltshire
Hooper: Bristol, Somerset
Knowling: Devon, London
Southcott: Devon, China
Strong: Wiltshire
Watson: Cambridgeshire
White: Bristol
Windo - Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire

1871 census appears to have the family (less husband) on 'The Susan' in Oxford but some children from London.  Phoebe age 33.

The surname looks like Collins.

The parents were Phoebe Ashley who married William Collier in Chelsea in 1856.
William Collier died 2nd Q 1871 in Oxford age 45
The 1871 census with "The Susan" is correct although family name Collins is incorrect it is Collier.
Other family members had connections with barges/waterways/navvies.
Phoebe went on to marry William John James Phillips 26 Dec 1890.

so, to recap did William Robert Collier marry Maria Ellen Littlefair in 1891 & have the 2 children ,Charles  (1895)& James?(1893)  or died in  1876??
Thanks Guys ,appreciate all your help. David
