So, John Kelly and Mary Lennon married in 1874 and the older children in that last census had mmn Lennon.

1881 3681/100/6
77 Arlington Street
John Kelly   29 yrs
Joseph Kelly 5 Yrs
Elizth. Kelly 3 yrs
Charles Kelly 2 months
Elizth. Kelly sister 24 yrs

There is a possible death for Mary Kelly in March quarter 1881, West Derby

1871 - I am not sure of any census for John or his sister, Elizabeth.

1861 2667 /55/33
Court 6, Cheapside

Joseph Kelly 46 yrs b Ireland
Ellen Kelly   33 yrs
John Kelly   12 yrs
Ellen Kelly   8 yrs
Mary Kelly   6 Yrs
Elizabeth Kelly 4 Yrs

I can’t find a birth for Elizabeth but there is a Catholic baptism October 1856 - parents Joseph Kelly and Ellen Shaghan

There are births for the other girls with mmn Strahan

There is a marriage 1851 - Joseph Kelly and Ellen Strahen.

1851 2179/318/31

Joseph Kelly Widower 31 Yrs b Ireland
John Kelly   1 yr
Catherine Kelly   Sister 26 yrs b Ireland

Presumably Catherine is the aunt found in later census with James.
As Elizabeth, b 1857 is the sister found with John after Mary Lennon dies.

I can’t find a birth for John but there is a baptism 13th April 1849 at St Mary’s.
Unfortunately, the Maiden name of the mother Catharine is not given.

There are other little bits which might help but you need to peruse all this information first.
Kelly is such a difficult name to research.
However you can see from those two marriages that John’s father was Joseph from Ireland (somewhere) and  not Patrick (from Crossmolina).

An interesting thing I noticed was that John and Mary Lennon’s witness was William Strahan.

In 1881, John Kelly’s neighbour was a William Strahan b abt 1852
There is a son in that household - William Gayton Strahan b 1874.

If you recall, Joseph married Ellen Strahen in 1851

1851 2182/208/46
Ellen Strahan 24 yrs is living with her parents Guyton and Ellen.
One would assume that young William Strahan, the witness is related to Ellen - maybe a nephew.

A lot to take in here - and we are not sure that it is the right family but I am leaning towards it being so  :) )

Lastly, there is a possible first marriage for Joseph

17th June 1845
Joseph Kelley 24 yrs address Pall Mall - parents John and Mary
Cath McAnnanny 20 yrs address. Vernon  Street parents Bernard and Mary

There are some births to this couple and I presume deaths for the same children but I cannot see a birth for a John with mmn McAnnanny. As I said earlier, the church record does not show mother’s surname.

There is a burial October 1850 for Cath Kelly 26 yrs of Westmorland Street which is the same address as 1851 census for Joseph and young John.

This looks to be the family - minus John in 1871

3791/32/9

Ellen Kelly   widow 44 yrs Market Woman b Queens County Ireland
Ellen Kelly   18 yrs
Elisabeth Kelly 13 yrs

Although it shows Ellen’s birth place - she is not John’s mother.

There is a marriage Ellen (Father Joseph) and Hugh McDonald in 1874

1881 3654/111/37

Ellen and Hugh McDonald with children

1891 2960/11

Widowed Ellen McDonald with children and lodger Catherine Kelly, 60 yrs b Dublin.
She might be/would be the aunt Catherine Kelly found later

This would give a birthplace of Dublin perhaps for Joseph.
