Thank you, I had downloaded the marriage record, but some time ago, before I started looking for Willie Challen.
After my original post I had found Ellen Trevatt (John and Anne's oldest child ) with Stephen Challen and other children. She is described as niece.

So is Stephen Challen connected to the Trevatt side or the Edwards side? I suspect Edwards as they are from Surrey rather than Sussex.

Several trees on Ancestry suggest that Willie's mother was Sarah Jane Challen, Stephen's daughter.

Thank you everyone.
Ann Edwards (wife of John Trevatt) and Maria (wife of Stephen Challen) would be sisters then, which is why Ellen Trevatt is listed as Stephen's niece. I have found a likely death for Maria Challen in Q2 1878 age 45. That's at least a year before Willie is born (if age on census is correct, so she cannot have been his mother. If Willie was the son of her (and Stephen's) daughter then Willie would be Ann Trevatt's great nephew. Possibly John Trevatt couldn't work out that the child was his great nephew in law so just said he was a relation. Still can't find a birth registration for Willie.

Sarah Jane Challen is with Stephen and some siblings in 1901. If Willie is her son I wonder why he is not with them.
Sarah Jane married Augustus Justus Kimber on 11 April 1906 at Woking age 41 and spinster. George Challen was a witness.
