Father and son ?
« on: Sunday 26 April 20 14:29 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help please.  I have this family ,  they are in the same property  but I can`t work out of they are father and son.
I can`t find John and Maria in 1841 , but this are is missing for this area.
I can`t find Henry anywhere before 1861 and not having any luck with baptisms.
The fact that one was born Derbyshire and the other in London isn`t helping either .
Ancestry .

if you can get to look at the marriage it should give you the name of Henry's father

GRO index 1842  has daughter Mary Ann Cowlishaw mmn Hine.

Presuming she is also the mother of Henry then John must have married quite young,  but he may have been a widower when he married Maria.
She could have also been a widow  ???

Marriage Date:    31 Aug 1841    Derby, St Alkmund, Derbyshire,
John Cowlishaw 45 widower  coal dealer Father: George Cowlishaw farmer.
Spouse: Mary Hides spinster 39 father Samuel Hides iron worker.
Both signed their names.

Mary Ann Cowlishaw  Baptism Date:    17 Feb 1842

A higler is an itinerant trader who higgles or chaffers in bargaining.

more than one John Cowlishaw having children baptised in London at around the right time. There's a John married to Edith, he's noted as silversmith and jeweller. There's a John & Jane who have a son John Henry baptised at St Marylebone 1 Aug 1819, dob 14 July father noted as servant. Same couple have a daughter Jane Eglington Cowlishaw born 12 Oct 1821.
