Need help identifying a parish in Llangollen
« on: Monday 27 April 20 09:42 BST (UK) »
Hello
I have a transcription of a baptism in 1811 at Llansantffraid Glyn Ceiriog, but I cannot make out the place name for the residence. I have attached a snip of the image.
It reads:
John son of John Hughes, blacksmith near ??, parish of Llangollen was born Feb 23rd 1811 and baptised Feb 24th 1811.
Please can you help
Mar :)

The "Parish of Llangollen" is simply that exactly. It did extend at one time to include parts near to Glyn Ceiriog.

It's Tan y Wern in Glyn Ceiriog _ or Llansantfraid G C. As WR has said, the Glyn Traian was part of the Parish of Llangollen  - it's just over a very steep ridge of the  Berwyns from Llangollen. This divides the Dee valley from the Ceiriog valley. My bit of the world  :D

I think it may actually be Ty'n y Wern not Tan y Wern as I can't see a Tan on the map there
.

Add - Tan = under Ty = house  Wern/Gwern = marshy land

Hi Both   :)
Thanks so much for your help and advice.
I'm going to have l look on the records to see if there were other children born, and maybe further confirmation of the residence.
This takes me back another generation which is great !
