John Murphy and Mary Ann Hendry
« on: Monday 27 April 20 21:30 BST (UK) »
Good Evening,
I am researching John Murphy born in Cork 1795, he has Daniel with I'm guessing his first wife in Peckham, Surrey in 1835ish, I'm not sure of her name, but then I have found possibly a second marriage to Mary Ann Hendry, in St Leonards, Shoreditch in 1836, John is down as a widower, she is supposedly born in St Luke's in 1818.

They go on to have more children, though I can't find baptisms for them, and can't find them in the 1841, 1861 or further censuses. John Murphy is  a silk dyer.

Any help appreciated, thankyou

The Bridget Murphy listed as sister in law in 1861 is actually daughter in law. Son Daniel Murphy married Bridget Quill 1860 City of London
Their son John registered Shoreditch 1861 (age 6 days on 1861 census)

1871 census Old Kent Road, Lambeth
Daniel Murphy 35 born Old Kent Road Lambeth
Bridget 34 born Ireland
John 9 born Hoxton (registered Shoreditch 1861)
Margaret  7 born Lambeth (registered 1865)
Mary Ann 4 born Lambeth (registered 1866 Lambeth)

All children have mothers maiden name Quill.

Good spot

I've not had any luck finding John Murphy 56 dyers Lab., Mary Anne 33 & Daniel 16 (from the 1851c) on the 1841 census together ???

Are any of these birth entries the children of John MURPHY & Mary Ann HENDRY who married Nov 1836 in St Leonards Shoreditch or are they from a different Murphy/Hendry marriage?

At the moment I'm inclined to say it's a different John Murphy who married Mary Hendry as the John born 1840 and Mary 1842 don't match the 1851 census. John was born 1848 and Mary 1850.
Unless of course the first two are deceased and later children given the same names?

I cannot find any of those listed in 1851, Thomas 1844, Catherine 1846, John 1848 and Mary A 1850 registered with a mother of the same name. I was going with Martell/Mortal but that turned out to be Edmund Murphy and Catherine Mortel married 1841.So back to square one.

Timothy is a clue though as they have a nephew by that name with them in 1851.

I had found the same Martell/Mortal birth entries as you but had not looked for a marriage

Will see if I can find a Timothy Murphy on 1841 census to either rule him in or out
