Thanks majm. The James / Mc Laughlan/Mclachlan I am looking for died in Spain while serving with the International Brigade.  I am told by a family member that he  ( James ) lived in Quarrier Street Greenock around 1936. i need to check with the Renfrewshire  board whether or not electoral rolls exist for around that time to see if anyone of that name. Thanks for your interest  Orkrad.

one source list 17 volenteers from Greenock but gives no names
International brigade site names 6 possibly remaining 11 where not atually
born in Greenock as volenteer site lists place of birth not place of residence,
one source has William Mc laughlin other name james born belfast,
Valuation Rolls for Quarrier street Has no McLaughans listed in 1930/35/or 40
only 1 name from Quarrier st appears on the international brigade volenteer list

Thanks again.  I did see the William Mc Laughlin ( other name james ) on the International Brigade casualty list  but was thrown by the fact he was born in Belfast.  The family story is that he was an orphan and fostered by the family so its not beyond the possibility that this could be our man. However its a bit of a long shot!   I also checked the valuation rolls as suggested by Forfarian without success.  Thanks for all your help with my research. Regards Orkrad.

@ Orkrad, anent the Irish link, are you sure he never turned out for the other side in Spain?  ;D Stranger things have happened & the Fascists had support in both Scotland & Ireland..It's unlikely to be a thing that was admitted to post 1945.
Dumfries apparently was a hot-bed of fascism, the local duke was a Nazi & the so-called earl of Glasgow was the main man in Scotland pre-war, something the guide never mentioned when I visited the family pile some years ago.
