Palgrave Independant Chapel - GARRARD.

Hi all

I've started on a part of the family in the 'too hard basket' and ended up with the GARRARD (also seen as GARWOOD / GARROD, etc) family.

It seems part of the family worshipped here, baptising their children and burying their family from the 1700's.  In 1822 the Chapel was demolished and the congregation removed to Diss, Norfolk and the old ground continued to be used as the burial ground.

Does anyone know any more on the type of religion practised there?!

The Palgrave Chapel (1695-1822) was moved to a new privately funded Chapel in Diss when it was considered to be 'inconveniently situated' as the majority of the congregation were from Diss! Whilst the formation of the chapels were Presbyterian the Diss chapel was  Unitarian when it closed in 1954.
The Diss chapel is still standing in Parkfield - at the end of the car park & is now a masonic lodge
There is a small booklet produced by Norfolk Unitarians called 'Congregations and Chapel outside Norwich' which includes reference to the chapels at Diss and Palgrave. I don't know if this is still available but if you contact the Octagon Unitarian Chapel in Norwich they may know.
'My Ancestors were English Presbyterian/Unitarians' by Alan Ruston (pub. Society of Genealogists) is a good introduction to the denominations & informs of the available records for christenings and burials.

Thanks for all your info.  I'll look into it.

I did find quite a number of records on Anc**y for 1700's to until the Palgrave chapel was taken town in 1822.  Quite a bit of info on the records actually. 

I'm Presbyterian but from the Church of Scotland, so just working out the difference has been interesting!

One of these is my family name and I have hit the biggest brick wall you can imagine and I think it's all down to the names changing. Please help if you can.

My family originate from Suffolk (back to 1550!), surname often gets misspelled as Garrard, but spelled in the family as Garrad over those 420 years.
So consider variant spellings.

Hey Garwoodsuff

I'm still around.  The names are very confusing and I still wonder at times if I'm on the correct path.  There are some online tree's with some very unusual info which also makes life interesting.  The family seems to be from around Wetheringsett.
