Solomon Ingram Dawson 1808-1856

Hi, I’m new to this site so don’t know how this works (never used a forum before either 😜)
I’m looking for any early information on my 3rd great grandfather Solomon Ingram Dawson.
I have a lot of info on him but I’ve just found court records showing he was in Preston prison for larceny. He was with a few other people but he was the only one to be whipped and I wanna know why 🤔 How do I find out?
I’d also like any info on his parents/birth. (I don’t want much do I?)

I'm not sure why you've had no replies,but let me be the first to say welcome to Rootschat.

It's almost traditional that you get lots of questions instead of an answer, at least initially! So here goes ---

Where did you get the information that you have so far on Solomon? and where did you get the middle name, as I can't immediately see that on any records.

You give his death year as 1856; there was only one death for Solomon Dawson registered in that year, and that was in Liverpool - is this your man? But the GRO gives his (reported) age at death as 40 ---

There are 2 Solomon Dawsons dob 1808 in the 1851 census. One was an army pensioner, born in Cornwall, lodging with his wife Mary and 3 daughters in another household in Liverpool. The other was born and was still living in Pilkington, again with a wife Mary and several children, and was a cotton weaver. This Pilkington man appears in the 1861 census. Is either of these men yours?

If you can give us more info (and tell us where you go the info from), we can try to work from there.

It would appear that Solomon Ingram Dawson was according to an Army record born in Penryn, Cornwall.  These records give his date of death as 15 May 1856

How far across Lancashire did the jurisdiction of the Preston court stretch?

I'm concerned that 2 men of similar age and name are getting mixed up here. I could well be wrong and am happy to be corrected if so, but I would have thought that the cotton weaver from Lancashire might be more likely to end up in court in Preston on a larceny charge in the 1820s, than a soldier from Cornwall.

The soldier Solomon is in an army camp in cheshire in 1841. I can't quickly spot the Pilkington man in 1841 (but I haven't looked v hard!).

I think we need to find out from the OP which of these men is of interest before we go any further.

A number of Ancestry trees have Solomon in them (beware - accuracy not to be taken for granted!) Some link his death to the Liverpool one, others have it as occurring in Rose Hill Fairfax Virginia USA

However, look at the burial record (on 157 5 1856 - St Anthony's RC) for the Liverpool death, and his address is Rose Hill!

Hi guys! Wow, wasnt expecting so many replies! I’ll try and let you know what i have so far (most from ancestry.com and messages from people on there and their trees)!
My Solomon was born in Penryn, married twice (ellen hart & mary ann kelly), im from the mary ann kelly side, thru his daughter, also mary ann!
I got sidetracked for a while by a birmingham solomon dawson who was also married to a mary ann kelly 🤦🏻‍♀️
He was in the army when he was arrested for larceny so rosie99 i think that is the right one altho i havent seen a record of what he actually stole before so thats new! (Fancy being whipped for a watch)!
I have him down on various docs as a shoemaker in Liverpool.
I cant get any further back than him tho.
