surname CLAVERANTS / CLARYVINCE in Essex, White Notley/Bures/Dunmow?
« on: Tuesday 28 April 20 22:16 BST (UK) »
Hello, I would be very grateful for some help to try and find where Hannah came from. Due to the unusual spellings of her surname I have drawn a blank so far. It's such an unusual name I am intrigued where it is from, and possibly what it started as.

Hannah Claverants (or any other variety of spellings) is my 4GG c.1798-1844.
She married Joseph Collard in 27 Jul 1818 in White Notley, she was single, he was a widower.
One witness was Ann Claverants - I think I have matched Ann to marrying John Baker in Mount Bures in 1827. Ann is also on the 1851 Census with her 2nd husband James Sawyer, and it states her birthplace as Dunmow? (Dunmere, Essex). So could she be a sibling or relative of Hannah?

Hannah also had an illegitimate daughter Hannah Margaret Claravance bap 24 May 1818 White Notley, who married William Moss in 1841 in Cressing.

Apart from that I cannot find a birth/baptism for my Hannah. I have found the surname around Wakes Colne / Yeldham but nothing else.
Thank you! :)

Ann Baker married James Sawyer 1845 so their marriage certificate will tell you who her father was.

Variations of surname
daughter Ann Sawyer born 1845 mmn Clarryovnce
son Ephraim born 1847 registered as male no given name, mmn Clarry Oince

I think they have been in Essex a long time, there is a will of John Claryance of Gosfield 1580 at the Essex Record Office.
It will be a matter of how the name was heard a written by the clergy.

The John Clarryvince who first married Sarah Hawes of St Botolph's Colchester 5 October 1784 at All Saints Colchester was of Fordham.
Sarah was buried 31 August 1785 at Fordham wife of John.
John married 2nd Sarah Clarke of Cornard Suffolk by license 3 November 1790 at Little Yeldham.
He appears to be buried at St Barnabus Chappel age 74 on 8 March 1831.

This probably means he is the son of George Claryvence born 4 April 1756 at Wakes Colne.

use Freereg and put in the name Clairvoyant, choose Essex and check soundex for name and you will get a few results.

Thank you, I'll give that a go - I don't think I've looked at that aspect of Freereg!

I appreciate all your comments on this amondg, obviously I'm making an assumption that Ann is related to 'my' Hannah, worth looking at the marriage cert. I had hoped DNA might ping up, but that takes time.

Do you have a subscription to Seax to look at parish registers?

I would start with Chappel as after the death of Judith 1787 in Wakes Colne all further burials are at Chappel.
Even "wife of George" 1771 of Wakes Colne was buried at Chappel so it would seem the family moved in that direction.
