OP's best next step would be to get a printout of the death of the son. Actually I would get one of the birth and death. 

OP may know  who was the informant of the death of Charles William?  Was this on the death registration?

So Lillie last in Victoria Street 1893. I don't have access to ERs so presumably you have searched NZ wide for her.  Have you checked Grey? The marriage certificate looks like  a copy by the Registrar and signatures would be too.  Possible in view of the strange spelling of Lillie's maiden name that the spelling of Gray there may be incorrect as well. 

Charles last there 1897. How is this verified?

Thought I had CW Gentry's death cert but no. Another one to get.

There is an Elizabeth Gentry died in NZ in 1922   (19/10/1922, Auckland) - she was a widow and a housekeeper in Auckland, born about 1855. Administration of probate only - no family mentioned.  Is it possible this is Lily under another name?

 - it sounds like from this that Charles may have been with another Sarah in NSW (although I do not see the marriages they mention - the children are born illegitimately in NSW as Joyce and marry back in NZ as Gentry).
