Sale Of Property
« on: Wednesday 29 April 20 15:36 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I am trying to find when a property / business passed out of the hands of the Shutt family. I have found something which says that Louise Shutt ran Shutt's the Butchers in St Mary's Street Newport, Shropshire into the 1930s after which it was owned by a Mr Minshull but still traded as Shutts. I have heard a story that says that the business was lost due to gambling debts but Louise Shutt was un-married so there are no direct descendants to ask. Is there a way in which I can find information regarding the eventual transfer of ownership of the business and / or property?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Do you know when Louise was born?

There is a Louisa Shutt death in Newport Shrops 5 Feb 1933 age 59.

Address 22 St Mary's Street.

Probate to William James Shutt lecturer and Charles Rowley retired butcher.

So the business was taken on by someone else because she had passed away.

Maybe her will would have some information regarding the business.

Hi Millipede,

Thank you so much for that. That is exciting news. ;D

This is the correct Louise. 22 St Mary's Street was the address of the butchers. I am still new to anything other than looking at Censuses and searching Parish Records. Can you offer any advice about how I would go about obtaining a copy of the will please.

This is the official Government site

https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills

You can search it without registering but you need to register to order the will

(you may find there is a delay in receiving the will due to the Coronavirus crisis. The will of Louisa is on there but note there are three sections and you need to be in the right section i.e. wills 1858 to 1996)

good luck
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Thanks everyone. I have ordered the will which will be available to download around 14 May. It will be fascinating.

Hi Everyone, I am no further forward on this one. I got the will record which shows that the will was in favour of Gertrude Sarah Shutt. The gross value was £1289 but the net value was only about £390. Would that be due to debts? Surely not all tax?

The will does not show her assets so I don't know whether Shutts Butchers shop was part of the assets, it was sold prior to Louisa's death, or even whether Louisa never actually owned the shop but just ran it on someone else's behalf.

Can anyone suggest a website where I can check the ownership of the property going back to the 1930s please?

That's a shame the will didn't give you the information you were after.

I don't know how to check ownership of the property - local council? - but would suggest looking in newspapers for any reports of the business, there may be advertisements for sale etc you can find.

Hi,

Some of your information appears to come from ShropshireHistory.org., which also states that
Arthur Shutt ran the Butchers business abt 1910 and Louisa took over 1920’s.

http://www.shropshirehistory.org.uk/html/search/verb/GetRecord/resource:20071231223535

Assume that this is Arthur James Strutt b.1876, the son of Isaiah Shutt, so if the property was owned and not rented it is quite likely that Arthur owned the property.  I note he was not living at the premises, probably allowed Louisa to continue living and working in the premises she had always lived in.

Think you need to go further back and discover the will of Arthur J Shutt and Isaiah Shutt.

Quote
Arthur James Strutt

7 Avenue Road South Newport Salop died 20 Mar 1938
Administration to Irene Emily Shutt widow

Quote
Isaiah Shutt

pork butcher died 26 Jan 1903
probate to Sarah Shutt widow and William Shutt pork butcher

Note one of them is administration and one of them is probate.  I believe with administration it means there is no actual will but in probate cases there is a will.
