Many thanks for all your replies.

I'll see if I can locate a burial record to see if John was buried with anyone and/or obtain a death certificate to see who was the informant.

I'm intrigued by the possibility of a brother, and that would tie in with my mother's hints that there was something rather scandalous about her brother's past and I may have wrongly assumed that this was a divorce.

Unfortunately although my cousins are still living I wouldn't want to ask them about John's second marriage as I know they find the mention of Gus very upsetting.

I have a vague memory of being told  Gus's actual name  and being puzzled that it didn't bear any relation to Gus.   For some reason Rita or Patricia rings a bell so I try and search for those names :-)

I'd found Isabella's death record but didn't think to look for probate.  If she was divorced at the time of her death but she had little or no money would there still be probate?

Thanks for the pointer re the correct spelling of Weston,   I find I'm making far too many silly mistakes like this which definitely is hindering progress!

Thank you

It is a pity that when marriages are recorded on the BMD websites that all the christian names are not stated in full.  It would make it easier in some respects when looking for marriages.

Helpful if some of the first names are unusual but with a common surname.

Have a look through the Electoral Rolls for Weston in the seventies for John.

They will give the address and the names of people residing at said address.

Ancestry is not returning any such records for me but there has to be some even if they are not yet digitised.

Thanks Colin,  that's a really good idea - I keep forgetting about the electoral rolls

The Electoral Rolls are how I found my errant Uncle who went to London and disappeared for forty years, I was able to narrow the possibles down to four then took a punt on obtaining a GRO certificate which gave me the details I had suspected.
