Barkers Entry Hull
« on: Thursday 30 April 20 16:03 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
Can anyone point me in the direction of, Barkers Entry, High Street, Hull Holy Trinity? My Ellis ancestors appear to have lived at number 8 Barkers entry at the time of the 1861 census. Can its location be found on an old map, can it be seen on a modern map, are there any old photo's? Any help appreciated, Cheers.
Pete

Look for preceding andfollowing street place names, pubs on the census pages

Eg Mr Westerby East  (great name) is at Post Office Entry a couple of pages back.

So it seems to b a courtyard of houses.

Further earlier is hannah Simms, the 35yold innkeeper @ White Swan

Following barkers entry is Grimsby Lane

There's a very useful webpage that lists the old streets of Hull.

No. 115 High Street was "Barker's Entry" according to this webpage.

https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/Hull/HullStreets/Hull1892StreetsH

PaulineJ has already posted the old map and you'll see that some building blocks have their own entries to their own courtyards.

If you take a "Google Walk" down Hull's modern High Street, you'll see that 115 High Street isn't there but if you walk down the street you'll see the large entries (sufficient to allow a horse & cart through) leading to the rear of the various buildings that are still standing

Thanks Pauline and Rena, I think you have given me enough info through the links to find my way to Barkers entry. Love the old photos of Hull and the list of names and roads on Genuki, should prove particularly useful. Much appreciated  :D

Hi Pete

Did your Ellis ancestors come to Hull from north Lincolnshire?

Hi Bee, I have them coming from Leeds. They were in Hull for the 1861 census and back in Leeds by 1871, minus dad, George Ellis, who died in 1866.
