Ynyshir schools in 1916 to 1925 era
« on: Friday 01 May 20 01:40 BST (UK) »
My mother Phyllis Jones and her twin brother Leslie were born 28/1/1911 at 9 Whitting Street, Ynyshir.
I am trying to find out about their education and for how long they were at school.  I know they went to an infants school which according to family story was "at end of Whitting St" in Ynyshir.
Can anyone tell me where I can find info on that school and whether it is possible to search for school rolls of that era?

Thanks Ian

Yes thanks - I live in NZ so was hoping there might be someone with local knowledge.
Although the archives are closed I’ll try emailing them

Hi Ian
You can visit Glamorgan Archives on line at https://glamarchives.gov.uk/collection/
and you are able to Search the Catalogue; enter the term 'Ynyshir school' in the search panel.  Next page click on Rhondda Division Elementary/Primary School Records 1800-1996.  Description: Rhondda Division Elementary/Primary schools records including log books and admissions registers relating to a whole list of schools scroll down to bottom and you will see it includes Ynyshir Board school, 1881-1915.

Thanks Roy
I have done what you suggest and found a document ref ER49/1 which is the infants log book for those years- should give me the info
However unless I’m missing something, I can’t go any further on line - can’t actually see the records.
Is that right or is there something I can do to see the details?
If I can’t, it looks as if I will have to wait until the archives open again and then hope for help via email since I am in NZ
Thanks for getting me this far!

I'm afraid not; the catalogue is used for checking what the archives hold and when visiting you enter the doc ref details on a slip and the staff retrieve the particular item for viewing at the archives.  In your case, knowing they have the documents of interest you can contact the archives (after lock-down) and ask what they can do for you.

Good Luck
