WA: THomas LOCKETT, Convict No: 6912
« on: Friday 01 May 20 11:34 BST (UK) »
Hello,

According to the Fremantle Prison Convict Database Thomas LOCKETT was re-convicted, after receiving his Conditional Pardon on 17/10/1865, and was imprisoned for 3 years.   Sadly, the website carries no further information and TROVE makes no mention.

Can anyone help with details of his crime please?

Thank you,

BAC3

No luck with his second conviction, but found this that you may not have

Thomas Lockett nominating Mary Lockett as an emigrant

As I read the item, he had also nominated William LOCKETT in the paragraph beneath.

His Convict number changes with his Colonial conviction, so his 3 year sentence in WA has him as a married man, a shoemaker, born 1831 and refers back to his arrival as convict no. 6912.  His WA conviction is as # 10177.

I can see that Thos LOCKETT of Greenough was named as nominator for Mary LOCKETT in Western Australian Times, 19 Jan 1875 that Matthew has linked earlier.

So I wonder about Greenough.

https://slwa.wa.gov.au/explore-discover/wa-heritage/police-gazettes  :)

With thanks to the Friends of Battye Library and the Sholl Bequest, the Police Gazettes 1876-1900 have been digitised and are fully text searchable.

1876 Index Page 1 to 18 (PDF 7.1MB)
March 1876 Page 1 to 20 (PDF 8.1MB)
April 1876 Page 21 to 36 (PDF 6.1MB)
.....

ADD,  I have had a quick skim look through the 1894 and 1895 pdf indexes under the heading 'INQUESTS' but I did not find the surname LOCKETT there either.

Good Morning Everyone,

Thank you for all your information.   I am very grateful as will be the descendant with whom I am in contact.

The details of his continued re-offending that you unearthed are extremely helpful, although from "killing an ass", his very first major offence carrying a 10 year transportation sentence (commuted), to his second 10 year sentence for larceny and subsequent transportation via Bermuda, to perjury is interesting to say the least.

The question of his emigrant nominations is equally as interesting.   Mary LOCKETT is presumably his wife, there were no children, who by 1871 declared herself a widow.   She had been gaoled for 8 months in 1858 for receiving stolen goods.  William LOCKETT is probably his younger brother who according to the descendant's research vanished anyway.

The death in 1894, aged 63 (born 1832 in reality), is very persuasive.

Again, thank you for all your help, especially the citations to study!!

Take care
