Might they be overseas? There's a George Kenning b c1854    Nuneaton Warwick who enlists in the Royal Artillery in 1876

Something has obviously gone awry

1891 - George senior & junior are with relatives. Eliza is an adopted daughter in Yorkshire. She's not with her adopted family in 1881

Thanks Mabel  I have Eliza with her adoptive parents - The Wright family - when she was 16  Perhaps because her mother died when she was about 13   I also have a George Kenning who was a military deserter in 1870  I haven't read the full report, but I am considering this as a possibility  He could have been in prison??  It just seems very odd that I can't find any of them in 1881  I'll definitely look into Emma Kenning
Thanks again

Is this George and Emma's marriage?  If so it is two years after Eliza Jane's birth

Marriages Sep 1873
BAILEY    Emma        Dudley    6c   127
Kenning    George        Dudley    6c   127

A birth record for Eliza Jane is eluding me.
Ashford: Somerset, London
England: Devon, London, New Zealand
Holdway: Wiltshire
Hooper: Bristol, Somerset
Knowling: Devon, London
Southcott: Devon, China
Strong: Wiltshire
Watson: Cambridgeshire
White: Bristol
Windo - Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire

I think Eliza Jane was born a little later than the OP suggests. She is baptised in June 1874 and is aged 16 on the 1891 census and 26 in 1901

This may be the birth

Hello Girl Guide  Thanks for your reply   Although in some records Eliza Jane's birth year is 1873,1874,1875 I tend to go with the 1871 because I have been to Tredegar where she and her husband Charles Henry Middleton moved to (circa 1897 when daughter Frances Middleton was born) Unfortunately, they found themselves in Bedwellty Union and there are numerous admissions and discharges for her, her husband and her children in the Gwent Archives. Her date of birth is always given as 16.5.1871.    I've checked workhouse records in and around Staffordshire for 1881 but no luck.

Her different birth dates are really confusing now!  I need to double check everything
One thing is certain: My grandfather's mother was Eliza Jane Kenning and his father Charles Henry Middleton and they moved to Tredegar Wales pre 1901 and spent several years in and out of the workhouse, with or without their children who were either sent to the 'Cottages' or moved in with local 'families' for a few weeks or months.
Census records up until 1871 tie in with the 2 families  It's the 1881 census that I think could help
clarify exactly where Eliza was  Any further help would be appreciated
