Adams/Vaus marriage
« on: Friday 01 May 20 21:06 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the marriage of Sarah ADAMS to John VAUS possibly at Cliffe, Lewes between 1670 and 1681.

Can anyone help, please?

Hello bearcat

There is no marriage recorded for your couple on the Sussex Marriage Index.

I looked on SFHG database for Baptizums ,sorry again nothing in the area you mentioned

Many thanks for looking.

I have Sarah's baptisms as 12 Jan 1654 at St. Thomas-in-the-Cliffs, Lewes, Sussex.

At some stage the VAUS family became Quakers.

Having failed to find a marriage in the usual places, can anyone tell me where any surviving Quaker records for Lewes might be held?

Hi bearkat,

The Sussex MI apparently includes Quaker marriages in Sussex.

I don't know if you have this information (in which case apologies for duplicating) but I did find a couple of interesting catalogue entries at The Keep:

https://www.thekeep.info/collections/getrecord/GB179_AMS5569_5_58

https://www.thekeep.info/collections/getrecord/GB179_AMS6517#

This is the catalogue entry for Richard's will:

https://www.thekeep.info/collections/getrecord/GB179_PBT_2_2_7_30

and his will can be seen here:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6GR3-HZ5?i=86&cat=173636

I've not read it yet, but it might be valuable to look at.

Nell

Thank you Nell

I didn't realise that the Sussex Marriage Index included Quaker marriages.

I had seen the references to Richard Adams held at The Keep.  I thought I'd have to wait until after lockdown to obtain a copy of his will.

Off to try and transcribe the will.......

Sorry, I can't help with the marriage.

Have you thought that the "Vaus" spelling is interchangeable with "Vaux"?   "Vaux" is a placename in Normandy, France.  Additionally, looking on the Genuki, Lewes webpage, it does mention links with William the conqueror.

The Vaus name has many variations/transcription errors - Vause, Vaux, Vaws, Vans etc.

A Vaus did come over with William the Conquerer but I've got a few hundred to research yet!

At the moment I have them in London & Bermondsey which is where the Lewes wool trade met with the leather industry.

I've had a quick look at the will which isn't the easiest to read but I'm not sure it's a Quaker will.
