John Thomas - Welsh River Pilot
« on: Friday 01 May 20 22:18 BST (UK) »
My husband's ancestor, John Thomas was born in Bangor ca. 1800 and married Ann Carter of Garston in 1831. He is listed in many records as a Pilot/River Pilot in Liverpool. Is there any way for us to research more about John Thomas? Thank you!

You are a very lucky lady if your husband has GARSTON blood in him ....lol - on a serious note CARTER family still here in Garston
John Thomas married Ann Carter on 19th August 1831 at St David church ,Liverpool..
Carter family here in Garston for 300 years - and they like a pint ...
an example - Eleanor Carter born 1727 Garston
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NPRQ-GP2

in case you are not aware Garston was not classed as Liverpool until around 1906 - I will check on that -....................added - 1902 Garston joined Liverpool
Garston is the very last Dock along Liverpools Dock Front - named Stalbridge Dock - the river Mersey thins out after Garston and Liverpool Airport runway backs on to Garston Dock -
because of the location of Garston Dock , quite a lot of Garston men became Pilot Capts - I have a pint with one here in Garston in a pub named The Mariners ... and contarary whay you may picture how John looked like - he would have been immaculately dressed - white collar / Black tie / black V neck Jumper / black trousers - jut like someone at a funeral - but he would have pips on his epelettes

He is definitely the one that died on April 30, 1852. Buried at St James's on 4 May, aged 53, abode Ray Street. The family was at 3 Ray Street in the 1851 census. Gore's directory for 1853 lists Ann Thomas at that address as the proprietor of a boarding house.

"Beyond the Bar" lists several pilots named John Thomas. One that died in 1852 was licensed in 1821 and retired in 1850. There should be detailed records in the pilotage service archives at Liverpool Maritime Museum.

Thats interesting Shaun - so he had a license 10 years before he married Ann - my money is that John met Ann throught being a Pilot - probably bringing ships in to Garston Docks  -
