Strangeways Prison, Manchester
« on: Saturday 02 May 20 19:20 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have an ancestor who was a naughty boy, between 1895 and 1903 he was given at least 4 terms of hard labour from the Manchester Police Court and Manchester Sessions.  Would this have been served at Strangeways or would he have been moved out of Manchester?

Thank you

Simon

Simon -- have you looked at the Crime records on Find My Past (if you have access) - they may tell you where he was imprisoned. Or maybe the local newspaper.

Simon -- just go to the A-Z of records and type in Crime in the search box.

(From memory - there may also be some Manchester prison records on that site - so also try Manchester in the A to Z --- I might be wrong about that though).

Also you have the British Newsapapers on that site.

I also had a relative who was imprisoned in 1897 and was told that the records for that period were destroyed in the 1980 riot, what a shame!
