Address in census is "Street"
« on: Sunday 03 May 20 17:03 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Edward Clark Pettengall is listed in 1818 census as living in Kirton, Suffolk

The reference is
RG11
Piece number   1881
Folio   108
Page   20

The address column has the single word "Street" for all the households on the page

I'm seeking the meaning of this term in census

Am I right in thinking that the household where not living in a building but actually on the strret or on waste land?

All help appreciated

Welcome to RootsChat

It just means the streets in the village had no name. The enumerator has just followed the instruction at the top of the column which says "Road, Street, &c and Number or Name of House", so he chose to put "Street".
In the countryside there would rarely have been street numbers to give
This map shows that only Church Lane had with a name https://maps.nls.uk/view/114503068#zoom=4&lat=2217&lon=8244&layers=BT

There are lots of villages in England where the main street is simply called "The Street".

Welcome to RootsChat.

This is the Description of the Enumeration District for Kirton.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

In the 1871 census it is called "High Road" then in the  1891, 1901 and 1911 Censuses it is "The Street"

There are lots of villages in England where the main street is simply called "The Street".

In the 1881 Suffolk Census there are 76 results putting "Street" as an address, although some are for the same village.
