Llettemddu, near Pont Llanio
« on: Sunday 03 May 20 19:16 BST (UK) »
Llettemddu was approximately 2 miles north of Pont Llanio railway station, along the old Roman Road. I'm guessing it was a farm, but can't find it on a map - does it still exist?

"......an unusually large number of relatives and friends assembled at Pont Llanio Station to give a hearty reception to Sergeant Edward Williams, only son of Mr and Mrs Williams, of Llettemddu, near this town, on his arrival home from active service in South Africa. Great preparations had been made for his reception. A triumphal arch had been erected at the entrance to the station, with the motto "Welcome Home" suitably inscribed thereon. The Post Office and the Creamery were well lit up,  a number of fancy lights illuminating the windows with striking effect. As the train steamed into the station its arrival was notified by the whistling of the engine and by reports of numerous fog signals. The young hero having alighted, the vicinity of the station was immediately illuminated by torchlights, and the Lampeter Brass Band, which had been engaged for the occasion, played up "See the Conquering Hero Comes." Meanwhile Sergeant Williams had been carried shoulder high to a fourwheeler in waiting. Thence the procession, which numbered upwards of 400, started for his home, a distance of about two miles. He was accompanied in the vehicle by his father and a nephew, with Messrs Roderick Evans, Rattal, and W. Evans, Crynfrynbychan. The horses were taken out and ropes attached. A large number of his sturdy friends prided themselves in having the pleasant task of dragging the hero of many battles all the way from the Railway Station to his home. Along the journey the procession was headed by the band, which played popular airs, being lighted by torchlights all the way. As the procession made its way along the old Roman road from Llanio to Llettemddu…..."

I can see Crynfrynbychan on the map, but not Llettemddu.

This is where it was - matches the description as it's right by Sarn Helen, the Roman road

Comparison with a modern map suggests it's still there. Spelled Lletem ddu. Just off the B4578 by Stags Head

Thank you very much, and what a great resource the List of Historic Place Names is.
