Salamont, New Barn, Longfield
« on: Sunday 03 May 20 19:28 BST (UK) »
I am researching someone on the Longfield Memorial.  The records claim his mother lived at 'Salamont' (other records state 'Salemat'), New Barn, Longfield, Kent.  I cannot find any reference to a house of that name.  Does anyone know if there was a house of this name and if so, does it still exist?

Many thanks
K8T

I do not know if this post refers to WWI or WWII.

Have you looked for his Mother on 1939, if it is WWII?

Not many houses are named:

The post refers to WW1.  I'm not trying to find his mother, I have all the information re the family.  I am just trying to pin point the house and exactly where it was/is.

Two different records give two different spellings of the house.  CWGC states his mother Jeanie Hinde live at Salemat, whereas on Army records states his father (although this is his uncle) is living at Salamont.  Both New Barn, Longfield.

The soldier in question is Edmund Marples - but just trying to pin point the house.

Do you know where the family was in the 1911 census?

Hi Stan,
Jeanie Marples was living in Bournemouth in 1911.  She remarried in 1911 to Edward Hinde.  Neither appear to have links to Longfield at that time

Have you joined any/all New Barn, Longfield facebook groups to see if anyone has specific local knowledge?

Personal story: Had photo of house that grandfather had lived in, with name.  Used google street maps to try to find it - not convinced. Someone on a local group posted about a collection box they acquired with the name and address of the secretary of the fund.  He lived in the house, several years after grandfather (1930's).  Someone else found him in 1939 and posted address.  (This was before I had 1939 access).  Used google street maps - house number a new replacement.  Some years later when I had 1939 access went and looked the man up - the local group member had put the wrong address (he put 32, it was 31).  Looked on the other side of the street, and there, set back from the road, was the house.
Moral : always worth revisiting someone else's results, and casting your net wide.

What about local ER's just before and after the war, to see if it is recorded?

This is a really useful map

You can search for New Barn.  When zoomed in to the max you can see house names.

I haven't found Salamont/ Salemat yet.

Many thanks bearkat.  It  has been very helpful.  I've had a good look and can't find  a house with that name or anything close.  I guess it must have been knocked down to make way for a some of the newer estates.
