Mobile Phone numbers
« on: Tuesday 05 May 20 15:23 BST (UK) »
This might seem a silly question but here goes.

Is there a way that someone can find out your mobile phone number?
The reason for the question is that today my husband received a phone call on his mobile which was for me.  However, we never give out my husbands number.  It took us both by surprise.

Many thanks

It's easy enough to forget that a number was given out by you at some point in the past.

Who/ what organisation was it? Had you dealt with them before?
All census look up transcriptions are Crown Copyright http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

I am a volunteer for the local family history centre and it was a member wanting to talk about their subscription.  My husband has nothing to do with the society so his number wouldn't be listed.  My number isn't even listed in any of the literature due to data protection.  All correspondence goes through the society.

It could easily be that someone wanted to contact you, and asked someone who knew your husband, but didn't have your number, and simply gave the enquirer his number.

It could be as simple as that but this person lives in a different part of the country to us.

Ah, so the mutual link person is less likely ... why not simply ask them?

I did, they said that it was in their address book and couldn't remember where they got it from.  I've not been at the society long so is a real mystery.

tillyc - I don't know where you live, I'm guessing in the UK, so there's no 'phone directory for mobile numbers, but in USA you can find out someone's mobile number quite easily as there are websites that reverse look up numbers (ie. they can look up the number that called you).  I think these sites are illegal in the UK.
