Mary Ellen Gorrell/Gordon b 1850
« on: Wednesday 06 May 20 14:28 BST (UK) »
I am researching a Mary Ellen Gordon b 1850 Enniskillen Ireland and died 1900 Gt Yarmouth England.
On her marriage certificate it says her father was ‘George Gordon’ a ‘shoe maker’. She was 23 and a widow. She married Thomas Simmons as Ellen Walker.

I found her first marriage to John Walker on 6 Jun 1870. Her father was noted as being ‘John Gorrell’ a ‘shoe maker’.

I’ve found a baptism that I THINK could be hers. It reads as follows...Helena, Joannes + Maria Gorrell. Brigida Cox who I presume was a witness.

It was in the Diocese of Clogher....

I’ve been trying to find information on this line for almost ten years lol please, if anyone can shed any light on any of this....it gives me the biggest headache

I did an initial search here with just surname 'Gorrell' and quite a few results- https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp
Carrickmacross (2), Donegal (54), Enniskillen (5), Irvinestown (7), Letterkenny (1), Lisnaskea (9), Londonderry (2), Sligo (1), Stranorlar (1). All those registration districts except Carrickmacross are in the Northwest.

Here's the 1870 marriage which gives her father as George Gorrell, shoemaker- remember that the 'residence' is where the bride and groom were living at the time of the marriage and may not be where they were from or where their family was living. The marriage was a Church of Ireland ceremony whereas, going by the Latinised Christian names, the baptism you found was Roman Catholic.

In view of the spelling 'Gorl' I did another search in civil records for 'Gor*l' and got lots more results.

I think...if I’m reading it correctly the Maria who’s baptism you found reads Maria Anna - Johannes and Maria Birmingham

Ok, the marriage between a John Orchard and Elizabeth Gorrell was 23 May 1869, Enniskillen. The fathers where James Orchard and John Gorrell. So it definitely matches up :)
