Just a possibility but sometimes illegitimate children have contact with their father in later life and adopt the fathers surname.  It may be that Jane was deceased by then & Alexander decided to use his fathers name.

I may be on completely the wrong track but it could be why you can't find him under Carr in earlier censuses.

Can you give some details of Catherine plus any children born before 1911 so we can check the 1901 - can't find anything at the moment

There's a birth in Dundee third district of a Alexander Adams Milne in 1867 ref number 282/3 84
On Family search it's Alexander Adamson Milne b14 Feb 1867 mother Jane Milne no father

Thank you, folks. Alexander and Catherine had two children: Jane McLean Carr (1896-1969) & Gabriel Alexander Carr (1900-1959). I too haven't found them in 1901 but, again, haven't checked under Milne!

Catherine is in Buckhaven with 3 children Annie Campbell age 10 Jeanie age 4 and Gabriel age 9 months
Also living with them is mother inlaw Jane Milne age 61 no Alexander
Ref number on Scotland's people is 459/2 2/ 43 and they are under Carr

It was/is very common for illegitimate children to use the surname of their reputed father at least in Scotland.

That’s true. My GG grandfather was born to an unmarried Cameron and yet emigrated, married and died as Morrison. Having said that, he was also on census as Morrison, mother as Cameron.

Possible death for Alexander 1925 all in Buckhaven
Not found anything on Jane but if that is a second marriage could tell if Jane still alive or narrow down a date for a death
