John Richardson 14th Foot #1242 b1850/1 Lambeth
« on: Thursday 07 May 20 05:39 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am trying to determine if this John Richardson is a relative of mine.

My John was born early 1852 in Lambeth to Thomas and Amelia Richardson.

The family is in Stepney for the 1861 Census and again for the 1871 Census with John the only one missing.  I can't find him anywhere at present so I thought he might have been detained somewhere like jail, asylum or armed services.

John marries Caroline Chaffey in 1873 in Bethnal Green.

Any help is as always much appreciated.

Could be!

But, the 14th Foot man is said to be 22 years 6 months on discharge in January 1873.  The Bethnal Green marriage age is 22 in December so not quite right although not unusual for ages to be a bit off!

The marriage is of John Fennell Richardson father Thomas cake maker of Brick Lane - do the middle name and occupation of the father add up?

There won't be a military record that will tie him to the family.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Thanks for looking MaxD.

I am not so sure that it is my John as there is another one registered in Lambeth Sep qtr 1850 that would fit the age much better.

Hi Mirl,

Are you aware that your John Richardson was a witness in the Annie Chapman murder case of 1888?

Hi Gary,

Very much aware of that fact, and that some ripperologists have even tried to make him and other family members suspects.

Thanks for your quick response.

Give those Ripperologists half a chance and they’ll try to fit anyone up. It must be irritating if their target is one of your own ancestors.

Personally I enjoy the research, my own ancestors were in the East End at the time, but the ‘hunt the Ripper’ game is a bit silly.

Regards,

Gary

Just to confirm - the 14th Regiment soldier is not the John Fenell Richardson who married Caroline Chaffey. The signatures are quite different:

Thanks, Shaun, that looks conclusive.
