John GARRETT
« on: Thursday 07 May 20 22:45 BST (UK) »
hello rootschatters

i am trying to establish a marriage twixt john garrett and an eliza.

he was christened on 01 july 1827 in long crendon buckingham, parents: samuel and martha.

i have a list of offspring born in dublin from 1852 where he was a train driver but no record of a marriage on irishgenealogy.ie

the church records simply records the mothers name as eliza hence the requirement to establish a surname for the first wife

i have all the info relating to his second marriage to joughin-kennish

i have two possible hits on freebmd  presumed date wise in buckingham but i do not want to go to the expense of obtaining certs as i simply want to know the wife's surname for my records

i am will be checking irish railway employment records via  IRRSA eventually but in the meantime any pointers (or rootschat relatives input) would be more than welcome

I checked BucksFHS - Long Crendon Parish regs transcripts CD.

No marriage in Long Crendon, just his baptism along with his siblings. No other records concerning the family of Samuel & Martha.

So my guess, the marriage occurred between Long Crendon & Liverpool. :o ;D

According to the Irish 1901 census, Elizabeth was born c1828 (Methodist), Isle of Man. That could be the best place to start a search for the marriage.

How about this from Ancestry........??

Name: John Garrett

Marriage Place:   Kirk Michael,Isle of Man,England

Baptism Date:   30 Aug 1829

hello steve
the 1901 census elizabeth is from the 2nd marriage (elizabeth joughin nee kennish .
interestingly enough she was from the I.O.M

however,  the corkill marriage date 1848 gives me some hope.

i will check the IOM railway records and familysearch .org with this new info.

many thanks
Tony

Oh yes, sorry about that.  I did assume that it was his second marriage. But the link with the I.o.M was what made me think about looking there for wife No.1.

Cannot pin down John Garrett in the 1841 census with any certainty, nor his parents(absolutely nothing). Perhaps his siblings may bare some clues.?

hello steve

most of this info makes sense (except welsh connection), a plate layer was a railway task so i can check the uk railway records when the national archives in Kew re-opens.

mary jane garrett (my wife's great grandmother) was born in Dublin 1853 (child of john garrets 1st marriage) so that would explain his omission from the uk 1851 census.

now i will check irishgenealogy website for death of martha which will tie up that loose end.

so, once again, many thanks for your research.

tony

The Welsh connection is purely for work. 1835 onwards was the zenith for the railways and after.

Much of the money invested in the Railways was from the end of the Slave trade, and the slave owners were compensated £20 million in compensation for their losses from 1834 onwards. That would be £Billions by todays rates.

hello again Steve
just like in the bygone days u wait ages for a bus and then 2 come along together

I am following the Woods Corkill line which seems the best option

I have traced 4 of the siblings born in Ireland between 1852 to 1862, annoyingly, the registers simply  record the mother's name as Martha

Liverpool was always a connection, as my wife's grandfather was born there (and the greatest football team in the world)

I will update as and when, meantime, many thanks for the input.
