The Padstow Branch
« on: Friday 08 May 20 09:28 BST (UK) »
Willian Henry Hellyar

Born 1849 Padstow cornwall the son of John and Maria (nee Talluck)

I eventually after many years!!!
Found him in the Census from   ( and I hope it is now correct)  1851 -61-71-81
although the first 81 I had I have now dismissed...

Then that is it...

His Father John dies in 1850 and Maria then goes on to marry Johns Brother !!! William who is my direct line...So that is a definate absolutely.

Through out the census years he at first is working with his stepfather
as a carter... and then goes on to become a seaman /sailor   etc..

the 1871 is the first inkling of this.

the 1881  shows him as married to a lady named Mary

After again lots of searching I found that this is possibly Mary BATE in 1874  as I have a copy from the Parish reg.  It shows her father as Samuel a sailor. and Williams parents and pob are correct.

AFTER that nada....... and hours of searching...

A presumption on Mary's Birth year... of c 1849  but p.o.b.. nothing actual.

so stuck... its a good search for a day of lock down.. I have enjoyed finding him so far.

I think or imagine due to him being a sailor.. he may have wandered abroad...

If anyone wants to dip in .. would be good  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D    ::) ::)

thanks

Xin

If you search this giving surname it shows the mother's maiden name, easy to use if you haven't already used it

Hellyar is quite a common surname in the registration district of St Columb

Did you find births from the marriage of William and mary?

Thank you Louisa x

Yes I have most everything from William and Mary right up until he is chucked into the Asylum !!! or should I say moved into -- I got the documents from the asylum and it was an awful read bless him.. Poor soul... My opinion is he was a bachelor whilst John was around and married to Maria.. John had an accident -- he fell from his Horse.    And it seems William took on the family.. they had at the time to move out of area.. due to marrying brothers wife laws etc... so yes  ... William Hellyar I am proud of as being my 2 gg.   Their daughter Phillipa is my Great Gran --- there you go :)    Now I have forgotten what the heck I was doing :) :) :)

but yes thanks for your input...

Padstow baptisms
I note a William Hellyar was baptised 25 Nov 1849 and a William Henry Hellyar on 13 Jan 1850. Tends to complicate things when William Henry's middle name is omitted on documents!

OOOH   that is interesting   -- the comments on the bottom of the document  state :  niether can I find the whereabouts of the late Master.  (= William Hellyar)

So maybe he 'jumped ship' in Truro  ----

Yes   that was the problem   with the first 1881 I found.. it was the other William   -- and I eventually discovered that this one I am almost positive is mine  due to the marriage doc.... stating his fathers name and that he was a Mariner...

I couldnt see how the previous one went from a labourer/carter to a shipwright amongst a family of shipwrights..  of course I could be wrong..

The Chalciope crew list has a William Hellyar signing on 11 May 1881 - previous ship "Tower"
