Thank you hmcc  :)

Thank you monica. I am not sure about Margaret but I have also been looking at a Mary Dalgleish who married a John Brown in 1770 in Dumfries. They did not have a daughter called Jane though.
Going to call it a night and start afresh tomorrow.  :)

How have you identified Mary Dalgleish SCOTT, born Tundergarth, Dumfries, Scotland in 1806......

and Mary SCOTT who has children  born Durham with James DAVIE........

to be the same person?

The fact that there is no record of them having a daughter Jean/Jane doesn't necessarily mean they didn't have one. It could be that for whatever reason the baptism record, if it ever existed, has not survived.

Hi Wivenhoe.
We know that Mary Scott Davie had the middle name of Dalgleish from looking at the baptism record of her first son and we also know she was born Dumfries. I can only find 3 women named Mary Dalgleish Scott born in Scotland and only one born in Dumfries around the same time as Mary Dalgleish Scott Davie. So no I don't sadly have a marriage certificate to confirm the Mary who married
James Davie was the same one but I am quite confidant that she is.

When you say Dumfries do you mean the parish of Dumfries or the county of Dumfries?

And what is the source for that information?

I see that there is a family in Woodbine Street, Monkwearmouth, in 1841
James Davie, 35, sawyer, born Scotland
Mary Davie, 33, born Scotland
James Davie, 16, born Scotland
Allison Davie, 14, born Scotland
Jean Davie, 9, born Scotland
William Davie, 4, born Co Durham
Mary Davie, 2, born Co Durham.

Is this your family? I take it that Jean is Mary's daughter born in 1832?

I see that James Davie and Isabella Dudgeon were married in Edinburgh in 1824, and had a daughter Alison baptised in Annan in 1827. So was Mary James' second wife?

Did the whole family emigrate together to the USA? When? What became of James, Allison and Jean?

The 1851 census states Mary was born in Dumfries-shire and the 1861 Scotland.
James and Isabella also had a son called James Bolton Davie.
I have found a possible death for James Davie in Sunderland in 1866 and one for Mary in 1861.

I have no reason to think any of the family emigrated to the USA apart from Thomas.

James Bolton married and moved to Gateshead where he died.
Alison/Alice married and died in Sunderland.
John George Davie and William James both lived and died in Sunderland.

Jane/Jean Davie/Scott is my ancestor.

Hmmm.

If Jean/Jane was illegitimate, there might be something in the Kirk Session records that might be a clue to Mary's parentage. Do you know which parish Jane/Jean was born in?
