Maybe just verify that it is your fence before putting plastic and trellis up.

Maybe just verify that it is your fence before putting plastic and trellis up.

Alternatively, ensure that any defences you erect are NOT attached to the fence in question.

I've had to look up Clematis wilt, I'd never heard of it, the pictures don't look anything like what has happened to mine. I'd like to think that it wasn't vandalism but the fact that I saw the same person cutting holes in my ivy and found that the top had been chopped off my willow trellis just before this happened, leads me to the conclusion that it was.

Pheno, the same neighbour was very keen previously to insist to other neighbours that the other fences bordering her garden weren't hers so I don't think that would be a problem. I've looked into fence ownership previously (for someone else), it's very difficult to prove ownership either way and the commonly held views that it depends on which side of the property it's on or which side the posts are on are myths. I've already had a trellis on that fence for twenty years or so, the ivy and clematis have covered it for much of that time. This problem has only arisen since the neighbour in question decided to fall out with me, not actually about anything I'd done.

Thats good Roobarb - just didn't want that to be cut down too.

Ownership of fences is often indicated in the deeds to the property.

Thanks Pheno for looking out for me.  ;)  My house was a new build when I bought it, as were the neighbouring ones, the builders put a couple of low posts with a thin plank between as a divider of the properties. I lived here a long time before the neighbour in question and I actually know who erected all the fences around my garden (shhh, it wasn't me!  ;)). And it probably won't surprise you to know that I've looked on my deeds! Not in relation to this though, it was a while ago.
