Not a will, but a bond.

Alice Fauxe of Belgrave in the county of Leicester, widow, Richard Nayler, clerk, and Thomas B[...]d[...] of Markfield, labourer, are bound to Master John Aelmer, Professor of Holy Writ, Commissary and Official of the Archdeacon of Leicester ... (etc.), for the sum of £30 to paid on All Saints Day next ...

I’m stuck with Thomas’ surname, but maybe someone else can help.

You’d need to check the English section of the bond (the ‘Condition’) to find out what it was they were obliged to do. If it’s filed with probate records, it may be an administration bond?

Yes, it’s an administration bond, because he died intestate (without a valid will). The date at the end of the Latin section is 22 October 1566.

The English section reads ...

The Condic(i)on of this obligac(i)on is suche that if the above

bounden Alice ffauxe do iustly & trewly admi(ni)ster all the

good(es) & cattall(es) that late were Anthony ffawxe her husband

deceassed intestate & pay his debt(es) & legacies so far as the

good(es) will extende or yet so far as the Lawe will p(er)mitt & suffer

& come to her accompte whe(n) she shalbe lawfully called thereunto by

thordinary for the time beinge & ffurther do discharge save

and kepe harmeles the Righte Reverend father in god Nicholas ...

Maybe bawdie - at a pinch, if one allows a substantial lead-in to the next d.

I think it starts with bawd___, anyway.

Brilliant, thank you again.  If it isn't being too cheeky, for completeness

Good call, HD. Maybe Designer Jeans can look through the PRs for Markfield for a likely name?

Afraid I can't finish it just now, but will do so later if no-one else has.

Essentially, she is promising to administer her late husband’s estate, and to produce the necessary accounts, in order to avoid forfeiting the £30 bond to the court.

Thank you so much both.  There is a lot in this post that I can learn, not just the transcription.  There is a Thomas Baldwin bur Markfield in 1592 I wonder if that is the tricky name?

Grateful thanks again for your time, trouble and expertise.
