Good thought, I'll check my notes about Solan, but I have found it on a passenger record and the US citizen papers, I think.

Solan every time! I have ship passenger records, flight record to the USA, and the gravestone (link below) Unless Solan was a typo originally but bureaucracy made it simpler to go with the mispelling?

It looks like Solan and Solon were fairly common names in colonial India.

I did find a Miss Elsie Soltan in the newspaper archive, in a list of passengers going to India from Britain, but before Elsie Solan Fok was born.  Not sure if the ages would work out but if she married she may have given her name to the child, and then Soltan became lost in translation or transcription to become Solan.
