Yes, I think that would fit better perhaps. I thought dealer in small arms was a bit unusual for a woman of that time.  I wonder if there is any other evidence to prove this?

Many thanks to everyone for getting back so far.

Andy

I may be totally wrong but I think 'small arms' is a fairly modern term so it would make no difference whether the dealer was male or female.

Thank you so much Ladyhawk - Much appreciated.  I now know a little more about her early pre Codnor Park  history.  The Birchwood reference ties in nicely.

I wonder where she was in 1841 & 1851?
The main names that I am researching into at the moment are Cadman,(originating from Bulkington, Warwickshire), Smedley, (Leicestershire and Derbyshire), Paynes (Leicestershire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire) and Udall - you will also find several other names on my web page. I look forward to E-Mails from anyone who would like to share or talk about our family history.

I have now found out more about Sarah's Marriage.  Sarah ‘s Marriage to Thomas Moreland took place on on 13th May 1854 at the Baptist Chapel in Swanwick, Derbyshire. Thomas Moreland aged 45 was a widower whose occupation was a moulder living at Riddings. Thomas’s father was also called Thomas Moreland and he was a labourer.
Sarah Dawes was aged 37 years and was a spinster living at Newlands Fam, Greenhill Lane. No occupation is given for Sarah. Her father was Thomas Dawes, a labourer.
The witnesses were John Dawes & Hannah ?
I am still struggling to find Sarah  in the 1851 & 1841 Census - is anyone able to help?

Slightly unusual to marry for the first time at 37 back then.

I wonder if she was at least living with someone in 1841/1851 and be under another surname  :-\

Looking for twin John may lead to something if indeed that was the witness.
Do you think the other witness Hannah was his wife or does it look like a different surname?

Many thanks Milliepede - That 1817 Baptism seems a likely clue. It fits in with the marriage of John that you suggest. I attach the "Hannah" signature to see if you can decipher it.
